The Four Winds Partial Hospital and Intensive Outpatient Programs are short-term, medically supervised outpatient treatment services for adults 18 years of age and older.
PHP can be an appropriate alternative to inpatient treatment, but can also be a benefit to patients transitioning from inpatient to outpatient care. The program is especially suited to individuals who may be in acute distress with symptoms of depression or psychosis, and who may exhibit disorganized or self-destructive behaviors. Adults who need a brief, comprehensive reassessment of their outpatient treatment, and/or who are in need of increased structure and support including a possible change in their medication regimen, will find this program beneficial. Substance abuse issues are also addressed in this program.
IOP provides opportunity for more intensive treatment than can be provided in a traditional outpatient setting. Adults who need a brief, comprehensive reassessment of their outpatient treatment, including a possible change in their medication regimen will find this program beneficial. Substance abuse issues are also addressed in this program.
Staffed by a multi-disciplinary treatment team, these programs utilize a cognitive behavioral and psycho-educational approach. Central to the treatment is the development of coping skills to manage symptoms of the patient's illness and the stressors of every day life.
Working closely with family/significant others is an important part of both programs. Therapists meet with the family on a regular basis, addressing significant issues, including medications. Clinical staff is available 24 hours a day for consultation with the patient and family in a crisis situation.
The programs provide group, individual, and family psychotherapy, individual case management, medication education, and therapeutic activities. There is a focus on individualized treatment to meet the unique needs of each patient entering the program.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a Cognitive Behavioral approach utilized by the PHP and IOP programs which demonstrates a significant reduction in self-destructive coping behaviors and suicide attempts. Patients focus on developing more adaptive methods of coping, concentrating on reduction of “Crisis Driven Behaviors”. Patients who exhibit emotional dysregulation or self-destructive behaviors, with concurrent diagnoses such as: depression, anxiety disorders, borderline personality disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and self injurious behaviors are ideal candidates for this treatment approach.
Most third party payers cover treatment for the Partial Hospital Program, and Four Winds is a provider for major managed care networks as well as Blue Cross and other commercial insurance plans. Medicare and New York State Medicaid are accepted. The referring therapist is invited to participate in the treatment planning of all patients, facilitating optimum care. Discharge planning is initiated at the time of admission and continues through the course of the treatment.

“I was taught the DBT skills in an effective way by the Four Winds staff. It took me about a year after that to fully “recover”, but I feel better now than I ever have.”
“I just wanted to formally say “Thank You” for everything you have done for me while I was in the program. Your groups are always fun and engaging. I always looked forward to them. You have challenged me in many ways. I was sad to leave, but excited to really utilize my skills.”
“I have met so many amazing people while I came to the PHP program here at Four Winds. I don’t think one day would go by where I didn’t learn something new or that someone didn’t inspire something new in me. The people here are truly amazing, some of the bravest, and most remarkable people I have ever had the pleasure to spend time with. The whole experience was very eye opening, and I have truly enjoyed coming here.”
