Estimation of Violence Risk in Adolescents

This presentation will review the issues surrounding the prediction of violence in adolescents.  An overview of the issues in prediction of violence will be presented and a discussion of the pros and cons of various approaches to risk assessment will be offered.  The specific advantages of structured clinical judgment tools will be reviewed and one instrument, the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY) will be presented in detail as an example. At the conclusion of this presentation participants will:
• Understand the actual risk for different kinds of violence by adolescents.
• Understand the problems in predicting violence created by the low base rate of most kinds of violence.
• Understand the nature and advantages of structured clinical judgment tools.
• Understand the SAVRY as an example of a structured clinical judgment tool for estimating violence risk among adolescents and understand how that instrument, or its basic principles, can be utilized by mental health professionals and others to identify adolescents who are at higher risk for violent behavior.

Fee: $25, payable to Four Winds Hospital. 1.5 NY State Social Worker, Mental Health Counselors and CAT CEUs, 1.5 CASAC Section 2 criteria and CPP/CPS Section 1 criteria clock hours, 1.5 CME credits pending.
