Disconnected: Technology's Impact on Kid's Brains

Thomas Kersting, MA, LPC

Kids today spend nine hours per day, seven days a week plugged-in to electronic devices.  The result is a malleable brain that rewires itself to adjust to the cyberworld and unadjust to the real world. The byproduct is chronic anxiety, attention deficit, depression, poor social skills, academic failure and family relationship problems. This lecture is an eye-opener for anyone who attends and will include tips to help folks start living more in the real world and less in cyberworld.
This program will better help participants:
• Understand technology’s impact on a child’s brain, with a focus on neuroplasticity of the brain and how technology can lead to “acquired” psychological symptoms.
• Understand the correlation between incessant screen-time and how it impacts mental health, emotional health and family well-being.
• Learn reconnection strategies to help clients who are struggling with tech addiction; including tools for leadership skill building, suggestions for addressing the media’s impact, and mindfulness, visualization and meditation techniques.

Fee: $25, payable to Four Winds Hospital. 1.5 NY State Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor and CAT CEUs, 1.5 CASAC Section 2 criteria and CPP/CPS Section 1 criteria clock hours, 1.5 CME credits pending.
