Amy Silverman, MD

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem in childhood—1 out of 10 children and adolescents have an anxiety disorder.  Because anxiety disorders are very treatable conditions, clinicians should become proficient in diagnosing the various pediatric anxiety disorders and ruling out comorbid diagnoses. This presentation will highlight the assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents.

At the conclusion of the program, participants will:
• Identify the primary anxiety disorders in children and their diagnostic criteria.
• Describe the symptoms, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric anxiety disorders.
• Differentiate between developmentally normal anxiety and pathological anxiety.
• Identify important comorbid disorders to the anxiety disorders.
• Discuss risks and benefits of treatment options for anxiety with children and their parents/ caregivers.
