Mocha o etsa'ng letsatsi lohle sepetlele?

In this @Ask_DrK_MD video, Dr. Sarah Klagsbrun, Executive Medical Director of Four Winds Hospital, answers the question, what does a teen do all day in the hospital?

Parents often picture psychiatric units as cold, sterile halls, fluorescent lighting where patients sit isolated in rooms all day staring at walls. Not here. Patients attend morning goals group, attend school, enjoy recreational time either at our gym or outside. We have basketball courts, art therapy, and Oliver the Four Winds therapy dog loves visiting kids on each of the cottages. Our therapists run evidence-based DBT groups to teach patients coping skills. Our cottages are separated based on age and specific needs. So, little kids with little kids, teens with teens, and adults with adults. Staff are supervising patients day and night. Therapists and psychiatric prescribers meet with each patient individually as well as run groups.

  • Will my child learn bad habits in the hospital?

Will my child learn bad habits in the hospital?

In this @Ask_DrK_MD video, Dr. Sarah Klagsbrun, Executive Medical Director of Four Winds Hospital, answers the question, will my child pick up bad habits in a psychiatric hospital.

Parents worry about “symptom contagion” when they admit their child to an inpatient psychiatric hospital. Will my child learn more dangerous behaviors from their peers? In the hospital setting we have staff 24/7 helping children navigate peer, academic, social pressures, and how to handle a challenging situation when it arises. What better place than to have a child challenged and learn how to cope, so they are prepared for when the real world presents them with all sorts of challenges. In those situations there is no therapist standing next to them to guide them. When a child is struggling, they search for ways to help their suffering and experiment with maladaptive coping skills, like cutting, vaping, or smoking marijuana. So you want the exposure to protect them from bad habits waiting for them outside the hospital setting.
